Sulfide and sulfate saturation of dacitic melts as a function of oxygen fugacity

چکیده
Sulfur is a key element in terrestrial magmatic processes yet its geochemical behavior remains one of the most difficult to model due heterovalent chemistry. The maximum amount sulfur silicate melt can dissolve before saturating with sulfide (e.g., pyrrhotite) or sulfate anhydrite) changes redox state system and has important implications for budget system. Several empirical models have been developed predict content at either (under reducing conditions) oxidizing saturation, but only existed that systematically assessed how basaltic as function oxygen fugacity (fO2) across transition from sulfide- sulfate-dominated conditions. applicability intermediate felsic melts rests on assumption composition do not affect dissolves melt. Here, we report new experimental data constrain concentration saturation (SCSS) anhydrite (SCAS) dacitic fO2. experiments were conducted using H2O-saturated natural 1000 °C, 300 MPa, log fO2 varying over four orders magnitude encompassing sulfide-sulfate (log = ΔFMQ−0.7, ΔFMQ+0, ΔFMQ+0.5, ΔFMQ+1, ΔFMQ+1.48, ΔFMQ+1.54, ΔFMQ+1.75, ΔFMQ+2.08 ΔFMQ+3.3). New SCSS SCAS modeling reveals occurs ΔFMQ+1.81 ± 0.56, defined by following equations evolved fO2: SCSSdacitic [S2−] (1 + 10(2.00ΔFMQ – 3.05)) SCASdacitic [S6+] e(1.26 2.00ΔFMQ))

H2O diffusion in dacitic melts
We report the first experimental study of the diffusion of H2O in dacitic melts. Dehydration experiments were conducted at 551–637 8C and 1–1450 bars for samples with ~0.8 to ~2.5 wt.% total dissolved H2O. The H2O diffusivity is proportional to total H2O contents at V0.8 wt.%, but increases exponentially with total H2O at higher H2O contents. The diffusivity of the total dissolved H2O (in Am /s...
متن کاملH2O diffusion in dacitic and andesitic melts
The diffusion of water in dacitic and andesitic melts was investigated at temperatures of 1458 to 1858 K and pressures between 0.5 and 1.5 GPa using the diffusion couple technique. Pairs of nominally dry glasses and hydrous glasses containing between 1.5 and 6.3 wt.% dissolved H2O were heated for 60 to 480 s in a piston cylinder apparatus. Concentration profiles of hydrous species (OH groups an...

15 صفحه اولOn the Controls of Oxygen Fugacity in the Generation and Crystallization of Peralkaline Melts
The formation of peralkaline melts is generally recognized to be related to enrichment of the mantle in sodium or potassium during a metasomatic event that predated magma generation. The wide range in mineral assemblages, mineral compositions, and fluid compositions in peralkaline melts are, to a large extent, a function of the sodium/potassium content of these mantle-metasomatizing fluids, whi...
